On 24th June 2026 Belfast Charitable Society were delighted to host the launch of VIEWdigital’s latest magazine, The Age of the Real Living Wage, at Clifton House.
Congratulations to the Real Living Wage campaign team, Brian Pelan and everyone at VIEWdigital on this important publication, which shines a spotlight on the impact and importance of fair pay across Northern Ireland.
As an organisation that has been tackling poverty and disadvantage since 1752, Belfast Charitable Society’s commitment to fair wages is deeply rooted in our history. For more than 270 years, we have recognised that helping people move out of poverty requires more than opportunity alone – it requires work that is valued and fairly rewarded. Economically, the Society recognised then, that it’s ‘easier to prevent economic collapse than to raise the destitute’ (Dr Strain, in his PhD about the society in the 1960s).
That belief continues to guide us today as both a Real Living Wage Employer and Northern Ireland’s first accredited Real Living Wage Funder. Through our funding, we are committed to ensuring that the roles we support are paid at least the Real Living Wage and to encouraging wider adoption of fair pay across the voluntary and community sector.
From supporting workers and creating employment opportunities in the 18th century to championing fair pay today, our mission remains the same: empowering people, promoting dignity, and helping build a fairer society.
We hope this latest edition of VIEWdigital raises awareness of the Real Living Wage, deepens understanding of the challenges of low pay, and encourages more employers and funders to join the growing movement for fair work across Northern Ireland.
